Demographic

There were over 2.2 million visitors to the Island in 2019, spending over £275 million! Overnight visitors accounted for £253 million of this spend, with day visitors contributing £22 million.

Over 1.4 million of these visitors were staying overnight; 68% of these were holiday makers and 24% were visiting for business purposes.

Day visitors equated to over 770,000; 45% were visiting for leisure purposes and 25% were business related visitors.

The figures above do not include the daily commuters who live on the Isle of Wight and work on the mainland, travelling daily.

Wightlink in 2019 carried 4.65 million passengers across their 3 busy routes, a number which in a typical year grows steadily as more people venture to and from the Island. The majority of these passengers travel via the two Portsmouth routes (approx 2.4 million on the Portsmouth-Fishbourne route and 1.2 million on the Portsmouth-Ryde roude). Just over 1 million travel on the Lymington-Yarmouth ferry route.
