Transformation, self-belief and how a pair of red high heels led us into a new business opportunity
On 25th November 2021, Claire Ede gave a short talk to an audience of businesspeople at the annual LinkedIn Local event in Portsmouth. As a sponsor of the event, Madfrog were invited to make a two-minute ‘pitch’ to the assembly. This is what Claire said:
Good evening everyone. For those of you who don’t know me I am Claire, and I am co-owner and Sales Director of Madfrog. Now I’m not going to stand here and give you a sales pitch because you’ve probably had enough of those. Instead, I’m going to tell you how the Wizard of Oz, coming out of my comfort zone and a LinkedIn Local event turned us from a tadpole into a (Mad)frog.
My dad, and business partner, Bob would tell you that as a kid I was completely obsessed with the Wizard of Oz – so much so that he had to record it onto a cassette tape so I could listen to it whilst on holiday. I loved Toto and Dorothy’s ruby slippers. Fast forward a few years (uh-hum) and I had my very own Toto (although I think he’d probably have cocked his leg on the tin man and caused him to seize up again).
Then for my birthday my partner presented me with a pair of red heels. No way I would I wear those I said. Why? Because I didn’t think I’d have the confidence to wear them and not care what other people thought. They sat in a box under my bed for a while before I pulled my big girl pants on (Bridget anyone?) and wore them to the LinkedIn Local even in June 2019. There I met Kathryn from Portsmouth Guildhall and we got chatting about my shoes.
The rest, as they say, is history with us adding the Guildhall to our amazing network of advertising screens. Since then, I have worn a variety of coloured shoes, but always come back to the red ones. And every time I wear them, I find they are a great icebreaker and conversation starter.
Our lives are a lot like Dorothy’s, our yellow brick road is a journey called life, where we meet lots of interesting people along the way towards our goals in life, whatever they might be. Dorothy’s red shoes symbolise transformation and having a belief in yourself. Two things that in business we need to go through and have a lot of.
